Fouquieria splendens Ocotillo Red Flower

Fouquieria splendens, also known as Ocotillo is a large spiky shrub occurs on rocky slopes in the south west United States at elevations of 500 to 2500 feet. Long, spiny canes arise from a short thick trunk. Mature plants can reach 24 feet in height, but typically they are found in all sizes. The small green leaves that line the branches are drought- deciduous, but will remain on the plant with supplemental irrigation. Bright red tube flower appear primarily in spring, attracting hummingbirds. Plant in well drained soils. You are selecting the Ocotillo size pictured. This plant is from West Texas and survived the brutal cold winter of 2010-2011. The leaves will drop off when shipped. New leaves will appear after re-establishment. It is a succulent plant.
